Regenerate, 18 x 18 Abstract painting is very personal. The jumping off point is somewhere between the mind's inner workings and inspiration coming from everywhere and anywhere. There is a release, a letting go, a willingness to surrender to what appears on the blank canvas, to listen to the quiet and follow where it leads. After several challenging months this winter, I am now super energized by the new work I am creating. There's something wonderful about losing myself in what is emerging on the canvas. There must be a willingness to fail and try again. Possibilities are endless. Trust is huge. As is spontaneity. Thinking too much can be a hindrance. And all these things could overwhelm without some basis of experience, but somehow, somewhere between mind and eye and hand, everything comes together to reveal something that feels right. There is no illusion of greatness. It's not about perfection. Perhaps all any artist can hope for is honesty. Sharing the work is really about offering a discovery or a realization. It's very difficult, perhaps impossible, to explain the incredible satisfaction when someone else sees what you have painted and smiles. It is an electric connection beyond words.

Like many artists, the winter months are a time happily spent in the studio creating new work. For me, that also means the excitement of considering direction. The answer this year is a continuation of my fascination with abstraction with special emphasis on texture, colour relationships, and depth. Labels are often tricky and hard to nail down in the world of art. My work falls into the category of abstraction, but I often think of what I do as responsive art. I am responding to this time and place and all the complexities that entails. I can't imagine not painting. It is a wonderfully meditative act that allows me to immerse myself in the act of creation. It expands the mind and challenges the way I look at things, and there is no end to what I learn along the way. Photos of artwork are a tease of the real thing. To fully appreciate, there is nothing better than seeing the work in person. When I deliver new work to the gallery, I always take time to look at all of the art on display and I am continually inspired. I hope you have the opportunity to visit 14 Bells Fine Art Gallery and find your own joy. |
